Nutrition and Dementia: Supporting Brain Health

Dealing with dementia can be difficult for both you and your loved one. It can be even harder to navigate meal times if your loved one is living in the middle or late stages of dementia, and since nutrition is essential for brain health and managing dementia, it is always a crucial consideration when looking after your loved one.

Specialist dementia care is one of the several ways you can care for your loved one during their battle with dementia. At The Bill House, we have a range of facilities on offer to meet the care needs during different stages of dementia, including our garden, social spaces and a weekly changing menu of nutritious dishes to support brain health.

The importance of a balanced diet for dementia residents

When suffering with dementia, maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is important to keep the body strong and healthy. For someone with dementia, poor nutrition may increase behavioural symptoms, cause weight loss, worsen confusion and increase the risk of falls and infections.

Eating a balanced diet can support your loved one living with dementia because it helps maintain physical health and can slow the progression of symptoms. This can help in supporting dementia residents through challenging behaviour by supporting brain function, helping manage confusion and improving the overall quality of life for your loved one.

One of the benefits of residential care is the nutritious meals offered to residents for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. At The Bill House, we know that the needs of every resident is different and the importance of person-centred care is something we offer for each resident. Our specialist dementia care is dedicated to ensuring your loved one receives the support they need and that their thoughts and feelings are considered every day.

Encouraging eating for dementia residents

At The Bill House, we understand how care homes can support independence for residents. We also understand that it can be daunting to watch dementia progress in your loved one, and both loss of appetite and weight loss can become concerning.

To boost the health and wellbeing of your loved one through a nutritious diet, we ensure to provide a variety of foods, limit foods with high saturated fat and cut down on refined sugars.

Our friendly members of staff are always on hand to ensure mealtimes are comfortable with limited distractions to support your loved one, especially if they struggle to make decisions or experience change in perception.

Mealtimes are an important part of our residents’ daily routine. As well as eating a nutritious meal, your loved one has the opportunity to interact with their friends and other residents at The Bill House. Creating a sense of community in residential care homes helps to enhance residents’ wellbeing by building friendships and social connections, and, like eating, we recognise that socialising is an important part of your loved one’s routine.

Tailored meals at The Bill House to support residents

Navigating care with confidence is important for your family at this time, and at The Bill House, we are committed to supporting you and your loved one through their dementia journey by increasing quality of life with specialist dementia care.

At The Bill House, meals are served in our dining room, where your loved one can sit in a private space or with friends. We know that a good day starts with a decent breakfast and finishes with a good supper, and it’s important that our residents look forward to mealtimes. Meals are a daily source of joy, sociability and sustenance, and our in-house kitchen staff provide a weekly changing menu of nutritious dishes.

We offer a continental breakfast, a two-course hot lunch and a choice of hot meal or sandwich for dinner, as well as snacks, cakes and hot drinks throughout the day. We cater to all dietary and medical needs, providing special options for individuals living with dementia, diabetes and other conditions, as well as IDDSI alternatives, which are presented to look like the meal for those with trouble swallowing.
