Our Garden

The Bill House Dementia Garden

The space around the house, as well as the architecture of The Bill House itself, was one of the things that appealed most to us about the property. That is why we have prioritised the gardens as we have brought the building back to life. Countless studies have shown that outside space can be absolutely vital for individuals living with dementia; it provides calm, beauty, and opportunities for exercise, socialising and learning. Many of our rooms have garden or courtyard views, and all our residents are encouraged to make the most of the outside space, which we have landscaped and designed to be an integral part of life at The Bill House, and our dementia garden is at the heart of this.

Life in the Garden

Our expert staff organise daily walks around the gardens, which are designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. In addition to these, there is an ongoing programme of garden-related events, activities and workshops, covering everything from the benefit of sensory gardening to horticulture and lessons on how to attract wildlife to the garden.

Our Dementia Garden

Undoubtedly the star attraction in the plush outside spaces is our specially designed Dementia Garden. Annie Guilfoyle is an award-winning garden designer, based in West Sussex, who has judged gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2022. Like us, she is a passionate believer in the power of gardens to stimulate, nurture and heal.

Detailed flower painting

We commissioned her to come up with a dementia garden that made the most of our seaside location, with planting that will help to conjure happy reminiscences, as well as providing a sanctuary and a space for contemplation. “My hope is that this garden will feel like a familiar place, bringing back cherished memories,” she says.

“The dementia garden is a sanctuary, providing sensory stimulation through the elements of sound, scent and touch. It is magical”

    Coastal sanctuary

The seaside location brings opportunities and challenges for horticulture. Coastal planting around the edges helps break up the breeze, creating a calmer space inside the garden. Roses and lavenders produce evocative fragrances; Daphne, osmanthus and mahonia will provide year-round interest, while tulips and daffodils burst into colour in early spring.

    Bee pollinating flowers

Attracting wildlife is just as important as ornamental planting. Nectar-rich flowers will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. A bird bath in the centre of the garden, as well as winter-fruiting shrubs, will ensure a stream of feathered visitors With plenty of seating, residents can enjoy the garden in comfort and peace all-year round.

    The Bill House Rose Garden

    Rose Garden

Sheltered from the winds that can sometimes gust off the channel, and with a covered pagoda off-set to one side, the Rose Garden is the perfect place for a family get-together, visit or party. A haven within the haven.

The Sea Lawn at The Bill House

    Sea Lawn

The Sea Lawn has always been a peaceful spot, with 270 degrees view of the sea, as well as a roomy terrace and a summer house, which can be used for activities or booked privately. This year, thanks to some new landscaping, the garden is better than ever.
